HOW TO CHOOSE the BEST WATER PURIFICATION SYSTEM
Water is Essential to LIFE!
THE URBAN LEGEND
There is an Urban Legend in New York City that I have been hearing since I moved here nearly 20 years ago…
” New York City has the cleanest drinking water in the country!”
I can’t tell you how many people that I have heard this from, and I find it truly fascinating. Perhaps New York has great water sources coming from the reservoirs in the areas upstate and such. And perhaps they have excellent standards for Filtration of this water. But what I think about is the adventure that water is making from the Reservoir to your faucet. And when I think about that, I think about Farms and Pesticides, Old Pipes and navigation systems, Rat Poison, Mouse Pee and oh too many things that freak me out about drinking Tap Water.
Read on to learn more about filtering Tap Water and Why it is important…
THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD HYDRATION
There is an Urban Legend in New York City that I have been hearing since I moved here nearly 20 years ago…. Water is essential to life. It influences metabolism, mental focus, and digestion. It can alleviate body aches, headaches, and high blood pressure. And yet many people suffer from dehydration, which negatively impacts them physically and mentally. It can dull your senses, reduce your response time, and even make you feel hungrier than you are.
Hydration matters because it regulates our systems and promotes better health, clear thinking, and proper sleep. Our Body is 60% water…. Water makes up 83% of our lungs, 79% of our muscles and kidneys, 73% of our brain and heart and 64% of our skin. It aids in the following processes:
- Assists in digestion.
- Facilitates waste removal.
- Regulates body temperature.
- Helps transport nutrients and oxygen.
- Cushions and lubricates joints and tissues.
- Maintains blood circulation and blood pressure.
But the adage of eight glasses of water a day is not a good enough solution. The belief that drinking any beverage is an adequate substitute for water is not a good enough solution. The only proper answer is to drink water — and not just any water, but cleaner, healthier water, free from contaminants and chemicals.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH TAP WATER?
While tap water is not necessarily bad for you, some studies have found that it can contain “forever chemicals” such as per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and other contaminants. Here's a closer look at the common ones:
- Forever chemicals: Exposure to forever chemicals has been linked to health problems like high cholesterol, thyroid disease, ulcerative colitis, and some cancers.
- Lead: In the same study that found forever chemicals in tap water around the U.S., researchers discovered 118 out of 120 samples of tap water they examined also had detectable levels of lead. Consuming high levels of lead can lead to kidney damage and nervous system problems for children and adults.
- Microplastics: Microplastics can be found in tap water. These absorb unwanted chemicals like pesticides, heavy metals, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). One study found that consuming microplastics can interact with our cells and stretch the membrane, which could lead to health problems.
- Arsenic: The tap water study discovered arsenic in 8% of samples. Long-term exposure to this chemical in drinking water is associated with cardiovascular problems, diabetes, and cancer.
- Pesticides and herbicides: These substances travel to treatment plants, often remaining untreated and entering our waterways.
Different water filters attempt to treat these contaminants through various processes, including the following:
- Ionizers
- Faucet mounts
- Filtered pitchers.
- Reverse osmosis
- Granulated carbon filters
FILTERED PITCHERS
Filtered water pitchers are often only effective in treating chlorine. While the water might taste or smell better, these filters cannot protect you from harmful contaminants like mercury, lead, herbicides, and pesticides. It is necessary to change the filters frequently, so they are not so cost effective.
REVERSE OSMOSIS
Reverse osmosis systems remove more contaminants, but they are inefficient and slow and waste 3-5 gallons of water for every gallon of filtered water they produce. They are also bulky, complicated, and limited by their filtered water reservoir. Reverse Osmosis removes all minerals from the water giving it a negative polarity. If you drink Reverse Osmosis water, you will need to replace minerals in your body with supplements or mineral drinks. Reverse Osmosis systems are the most expensive filtration systems and do take out the most contaminants. However, they deplete the water of vital good minerals and waste a lot of water in the process.
CARBON BLOCK FILTERS
Carbon is an excellent filter medium since it is natural, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly. It attracts contaminant particles and physically traps them. However, a loose collection of granular activated carbon (GAC) is generally ineffective since it doesn't force water to stay in contact with the carbon long enough to trap contaminants, and water can make a channel through the filter. Carbon Block filters are effective in getting out most heavy metals, Chlorine, Fluoride, Bacteria, Virus, Parasites, Medications, Pesticides, Plastics, and other toxins. There are a variety of carbon block filters, and the prices vary according to the type and style of unit that you choose.
Statement from Multipure:
While many water filters are slow and ineffective, we designed our signature solid carbon block technology to make our filters much more powerful, compact, and efficient.
For over 50 years, we've been working to improve your water. When arsenic-V became an issue in drinking water, we made sure to create products designed to deal with arsenic-V. When prescription and over-the-counter drugs became a concern in drinking water, we made sure that our drinking water filters treated them in your water.
When bacteria and viruses became a concern in your water, we developed a filter to treat bacteria and viruses in your drinking water — without power requirements, and without adding additional chemicals into the water. With the "forever chemicals" — PFOA and PFOS — currently a concern in your water, we made sure we had drinking water filters to protect your water from those chemicals.
