Party Healthy: Tips for Staying Healthy during Holiday Fun!

Holiday Season is upon us and that means Socializing is in Full Swing.

Good News is that you don’t have to derail your health completely

just because you want to have fun!

Check out some of my Tips for Healthy-ish Partying from my Book,

“The Rockstar Remedy, A Rock’n’Roll Doctors Prescription for Living and Long Healthy Life.

PARTY HEALTHY

The GRAPEFRUIT TRICK

While it’s well known that alcohol can be rough on the liver, what’s less known is that certain substances impact how the organ metabolizes spirits. For example, grapefruit contains naringenin, which slows the detox of alcohol from the liver; therefore, the alcohol stays in your blood longer.

The formula is simple: Grapefruit + Spirits = Bigger Buzz

The upside is that when you mix grapefruit juice with alcohol, you need to drink half as much to get the same high. This is a very effective Harm Reduction Technique I use with rock stars to decrease their alcohol intake if they are not ready to cut out alcohol completely. They have a drink mixed with a little grape- fruit juice and they drink less. The downside is that if you add grapefruit juice to your cocktails, but still drink heavily, you’ll most likely get very drunk!

Consider yourself warned!

HEALTHIEST ALCOHOL CHOICES

If Alcohol is a must for your Good Times, then consider Gluten Free and Organic Options.   Think about Organic Wines to avoid Pesticides.   Or if there are no Organic options to choose from, the Old World Wines from France, Spain and Italy are the Best.    Clear White Alcohols are usually less allergenic and often Gluten Free and lower in sugar:  Gin, Vodka, Tequila, and Sake.    There are also some new Gluten Free Beers if you like your Brew.   Just remember, that Alcohol is only OK in moderation.  And Don’t Forget to assign a designated driver before you venture out!

SUPPLEMENTS TO PROTECT YOUR LIVER

Try the following foods and supplements (per bottle dosage instructions) on nights you drink:

  • ANTIOXIDANTS AND BIOFLAVONOIDS
  • GLUTATHIONE
  • GLUTAMINE,
  • MILK THISTLE
  • VITAMIN C

Milk Thistle Tea

ALTERNATIVES to ALCOHOL

Whether you’re partaking in a monthlong detox, a recovery program, or simply a night off from cocktailing, social situations like bars and parties can be challenging. Well-meaning friends, family, coworkers, and party hosts often don’t take “no thank you” for an answer. Dodging the inevitable questioning or prodding is easier when you have a drink in hand. Mentally, it can help you feel more “celebratory” and less awkward in social situations.

Try these non-alcoholic bar options:

  • ARNOLD PALMER a 50-50 split of iced tea and lemonade.
  • BITTERS AND SODA OR TONIC
  • BROWN PELICAN apple cider and ginger beer
  • CRANBERRY JUICE AND LIME
  • GUNNER ginger beer, ginger ale, Angostura bitters, and a splash of lime cordial
  • HENRY orange juice and lemonade
  • JEFFERSON iced tea and orange juice
  • LEMON, LIME, & BITTERS (LLB) lemonade, lime juice, and bitters
  • MICHELANGELO orange juice and tonic water
  • NON-ALCOHOLIC BEERS O’Doul’s, Kaliber, Buckler, Sharp’s, Coors NA, or Busch NA
  • REBECCA pineapple juice, cranberry juice, and soda water
  • ROCK SHANDY soda water, lemonade, and a dash of Angostura bitters
  • SAFE SEX ON THE BEACH cranberry juice, grapefruit juice, and peach nectar
  • SPARKLING GRAPE JUICE
  • VIRGIN MARY a Bloody Mary without the vodka

RxSTAR REMEDY HANGOVER CURES

Sometimes the day after drinking can make you never want to drink again. The good news is that there are healthier “cures” for the morning after than a greasy cheeseburger and fries.  Try my Alternatives to replenish much- needed vitamins, minerals, and fluids:

DETOX A good place to start is the detox shake. Using it as part of the detox leads to a cleaner liver, but it can also be used on the morning after to help you replenish lost vitamins and bounce back.

HYDRATE The more hydrated you are, the more your symptoms will ease. Replenish with electrolyte replacements like coconut water and vegetable bouillon along with 8–10 glasses of water to flush toxins.

NOURISH Pass on the leftover pizza and eat easy- to-digest foods like oatmeal, rice, and soup.

SUPPLEMENT B-complex, Emergen-C (one to two packets daily), and vitamin C (1,000 mg) to replenish your vitamin levels. Add herbal remedies to support your liver, like dandelion tea (1–2 cups) or milk thistle (per bottle instructions).

TREAT Get at least 8–10 hours of sleep. A sauna, steam, or exercise will help you sweat out the toxins. And if you can get to your acupuncturist, ask for add-on acupuncture points: ST 36, LI 4, ST 44, LV3, PC 6.
